What is a Variable Speed Furnace

January 22, 2014

Today, consumers can choose between single-stage furnaces, two-stage furnaces and variable-speed furnaces. The best choice is dependent upon size, levels, ductwork, insulation and budget for your home. Single-stage furnaces have just one stage of high heat output. There is just an off and on switch with nothing in between. These types of furnaces disperse the most amount of energy possible no matter what the outdoor temperatures are. This can be costly for utility bills during the winter.

Variable Speed Furnace vs Two-Stage Furnace

Two-stage furnaces have more efficiency than single-stage furnaces. During the first stage, these units run approximately 65 percent of the furnace’s full capacity. If the outdoor temperatures become very cold, the second stage kicks in to provide the needed heat. These units are also much quieter since it doesn’t operate at full capacity every time it runs. In addition, there are less pollutants created in the environment.

Unlike two-stage furnaces and single-stage furnaces, a variable-speed furnace doesn’t refer to the amount of stages in the furnace. The term refers to the fan motor in the furnace. The fan motor in a variable-speed furnaces operates at different speeds and monitors and adjusts the amount of heated air dispersed. This results in better airflow, humidity and circulation of the indoor air. Even when a variable-speed furnace is not on, the fan continues to operate, and the filter captures airborne contaminants.

Variable-speed furnaces are the most intelligent furnaces on the market. Although the upfront costs are higher than single-stage furnaces and two-stage furnaces, the savings is quickly realized in reduced energy costs over the lifespan of the unit. The Carrier variable speed furnace runs in low stage 90 percent of the time. It has up to 96.7 percent AFUE, humidity system technology, comfort fan technology, advanced temperature control and a 10-year limited warranty on parts. The Carrier variable speed furnace offers both ultimate control and indoor comfort.
