History

Like the rest of the South Carolina Lowcountry, North Charleston has a rich history. It was permanently settled in the middle of the 17th century and quickly gave rise to a host of long-lived plantations, including Marshlands Plantation and Camp Plantation. By the middle of the 18th century, nearby Charleston had become one of the most important ports on the Eastern Seaboard. Although the area mostly escaped damage from the Revolutionary War, the Civil War officially began at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. As the Charleston area gained popularity as a vacation destination and retirement community, North Charleston exhibited rapid growth through the turn of the 21st century.

Geography

North Charleston is located in a marshy area to the northwest of central Charleston. Thanks to its fairly large land area of more than 75 square miles, it spills into three counties: Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester. The area’s landscape is quite flat and mostly marshy, but a few patches of higher ground can be found on its northern fringes. North Charleston’s major transportation thoroughfares include Interstates 26 and 526 as well as U.S. Highway 52. The city is home to Charleston International Airport.

Population and Demographics

Rapidly growing North Charleston’s population now sits between 100,000 and 105,000. The city has added more than 50,000 inhabitants during the past three decades and looks poised to continue its growth spurt. Development is particularly feverish in the northern precincts of the city, and many new arrivals find their way to this area from northern cities like New York and Chicago. Many of North Charleston’s inhabitants are retirees and empty-nesters. Others work in the region’s vibrant tourism industry.
