Furnace Filter

Breaking Down the Filter Options for your Furnace

January 15, 2022

Changing the filter in your furnace is one of the easiest ways to extend its life. Doing so also improves the quality of the air you breathe. But when you visit a home improvement store in Charleston, SC, to stock up on furnace filters, you will find that there are a number of options available. We can help you to determine which is the right filter for your furnace.

Importance of Regular Filter Replacement

Most furnace manufacturers recommend changing the filters at least once a month. If you skip this task, your family is likely to experience more headaches, aggravated respiratory problems and sore throats because more dirt and dust will find its way into your HVAC system.

Before you head to the store, take a moment to locate the current filter within your furnace. Take a photo of it so you remember the correct size. The standard sizes will include three numbers, and there are over 100 different variations. Only one size will fit properly in your furnace.

Ratings

You’ll also notice that each type of filter has a rating called the minimum efficiency reporting value, or MERV. This scale goes from 1 to 16 and indicates the level of efficiency of that filter. Those who suffer from allergies, asthma or other breathing problems will probably want to opt for a filter that has a higher MERV rating. Filters with higher MERV ratings tend to cost more because they do more to keep your system and indoor air clean.

Disposable vs. Washable

The most common furnace filters are the disposable types which are also more affordable. Other options are fiberglass filters, which have a MERV rating between one and four, and polyester filters, which have ratings between 8 and 13. You can also opt for washable filters, which cost more up front.

Protect your loved ones by changing the filter in the furnace as needed. If you have questions about what filter is best for your home, or if you need heating repairs, call Berkeley Heating & Air Conditioning today.
