How to Keep Your Furry Friends From Reducing Indoor Air Quality

January 23, 2018

Pets are wonderful sources of companionship and fun. Unfortunately, your furry friends can also bring allergens into your Hanahan, South Carolina, home and worsen your indoor air quality. Pet dander often causes sneezing, skin rashes, watery eyes and breathing troubles. You can keep your furry friends from reducing your home’s indoor air quality by using an air purifier, grooming your pets and keeping them in designated areas.

Use a High-Quality Air Purifier

An air purifier or cleaner can remove pollutants, like pet dander and droppings, that your HVAC system’s filter might miss. Look for a model with a high minimum efficiency reporting value or MERV rating for the best performance. Some air purifiers can also remove bacteria and viruses from your home’s air while keeping pet hair from accumulating on your floors and furniture.

Groom Your Pets Often

You can get rid of excess fur and pet dander by bathing and brushing your furry friends regularly. If you’re allergic to pets, take them to a professional groomer at least once per week instead of doing it yourself. That way, you can minimize your family’s exposure to allergens, keep pets from tracking dirt and contaminants around your home, and make sure your animal companions always smell great.

Keep Pets in Special Places

Don’t let your pets sit on your furniture. Try to also keep them away from carpeting. Use one or more pet beds, and remember to wash or clean them often. For better sleep without annoying allergy symptoms, don’t let your pets in your bedroom.
